Ivana – Change Maker
16th December 2025A sunny trip out to Towneley Hall & Garden Centre
In June 2026, a group of 8 Change Makers and 11 residents from Dovestone Gardens enjoyed a trip out as part of our 2-year Intergenerational Project. From age 10 to 95, everyone had a fab afternoon in each other's company.
After several successful meetings at Dovestone Gardens & our fantastic Easter Party, members of the project suggested a local trip out together. Although Towneley Hall is just on our doorstep and didn't seem far, it was the ideal location - with lots to do & a short distance to travel for those with mobility issues, we set on organising a fun afternoon for all involved. Plus most of the young people & many of the residents had never visited!
With 8 walking frames & 2 mobility scooters to accommodate, we contacted C&S Coaches and booked their accessible minibus - their customer service was great from start to finish, and driver Steve was a great sport throughout the afternoon. The residents were akin to giddy school children, singing Wheels on the Bus as we set off! They continue to bring great spirit to the project. Thankfully the sun shone for us, so our Change Makers group walked to Towneley from our office at Burnley Youth Theatre, and greeted Dovestone residents as they arrived.
We contacted Sally Smith, manager of Towneley Hall, who was so accommodating, suggesting a room for us to use for a buffet & refreshments and as a base for those who might need a rest. Some of the Change Makers group helped prepare the buffet, including sandwiches and delicious freshly baked sausage rolls from Haffners Bakery - a real treat - as well as cakes and a fresh fruit platter, which everyone loved on such a hot day.
Sally had organised for the Hall volunteers to put together a quiz for us, which proved to be a real hit, giving some focus to our exploring & bringing in some healthy competition between teams. The young people & residents split into 3 groups, exploring the Hall together & finding the quiz answers along the way. This was a perfect alternative to an organised tour, which would have been difficult for residents with mobility & hearing issues.
2 members of the group preferred to explore the grounds & gardens surrounding the Hall, so Change Maker Grace accompanied them and enjoyed their company.
We met back together for quiz answers & a drink before Steve picked us up to head to the Garden Centre for a mooch around & an ice cream outside all together in the cafe - a perfect end to a lovely afternoon.
Our Connected Generations project continues to exceed our expectations, breaking down stereotypes to build meaningful, respectful relationships between younger & older people who wouldn't usually get the opportunity to connect. We had wonderful feedback from residents & young people alike, who so appreciate these opportunities to get involved.
With thanks to The National Lottery Community Fund, whose generous funding makes all this possible.
