From First Logo to Director: 21 Years with Participation Works
Hi, I’m Andrew Wren, a freelance designer and director at Participation Works. I’ve been working with PW for over two decades, originally supporting the team with branding and design projects, and now also helping to steer the organisation as part of the board. This is a little reflection on how it all began, what’s changed over the years, and why I’m still so proud to be involved.
I first met Lynne 21 years ago, in a meeting with Smile. I was there to talk about designing their logo. At the end of the meeting, Lynne introduced herself to me. That brief chat turned into a long-standing working relationship - one that has spanned two decades, countless projects, and a seat on the PW board.
Back then I was a young designer, just starting out and trying to build my client base. PW was one of my first clients. I didn’t fully grasp the breadth of what they did at the time, but it was clear they had big ideas, a strong sense of purpose, and real ambition to improve lives across Burnley & Pendle.
The first job I did for them was designing the logo. Lynne was incredibly supportive. We worked together to get it just right, and that collaborative spirit has remained a constant ever since.
Over the years I’ve seen PW grow through challenge and change. The funding landscape has become tougher, technology has evolved rapidly, and the needs of young people have shifted. But PW has adapted, stayed true to its mission, and found new ways to keep reaching out. That resilience is one of the things I admire most.
In 2018, after 14 years of working together on design and marketing projects, I was honoured to be asked to join the board as a director. It felt like a natural next step in a journey we’d shared. I’ve grown with the organisation, and feel proud of what we’ve achieved together.
These days I play more of an advisory role, offering marketing support where I can. I still work closely with Evie, who’s done a brilliant job of taking the website to the next level - introducing a blog and improving PW’s social media presence. The site has become a central hub for sharing news, showcasing recent projects, and reflecting PW’s values in a way that’s accessible and inspiring.
From logos and websites to banners and business stationery, I’ve enjoyed using my design skills to help shape the brand. But more than that, I’ve made friendships. I’ve come to know the whole team. And I’ve always felt valued - something I deeply appreciate.
Everyone needs someone like Lynne when they’re starting out. She supported me from day one, and she continues to champion others who are trying to make a difference in their lives. She is relentless, selfless, and she’s built something that brings real change to the communities it serves.
If you haven’t already, have a look around the website to see the sort of work PW is involved in. From visiting schools to support children who need it most, to sending the Youth Van around town to offer young people a safe, supportive space with trusted mentors - there’s always something going on. Behind it all is a team of passionate staff and volunteers who care deeply about making our community stronger.
PW is evolving. The team is growing. The future may hold new challenges, but I’m confident they’ll meet them with the same energy and integrity they always have.
And as for me, I’m still running AW Design and always happy to offer advice to young people who are starting out on their own creative journeys. Just like I was, 21 years ago.
