How did you first get involved with Participation Works?
I first got involved with Participation Works at a very young age - around eight, if I remember correctly. I joined the Youth Bus project, where my friends and I would visit the bus in our local area. It was not only a space to play games and socialize but also an opportunity to participate in workshops and learning activities.
As I grew up with the Youth Bus project, it became especially valuable when I was studying for my GCSEs. During the pandemic, when schools were shut down and my education was severely impacted, the staff provided me with learning resources that greatly supported my studies. Participation Works didn’t just help with my education - they also provided crucial support for my mental well-being during a very challenging time.
Towards the end of the pandemic, I was invited to join the Participation Works Youth Panel, where young people could share their perspectives on the community and drive meaningful change. Through this experience, I have developed numerous skills, such as public speaking, and have had the opportunity to take part in events like the Burnley Business Awards. Even now, at nearly 20 years old, I continue to actively support Participation Works, attending meetings and events whenever possible.
What impact has our work had in your life?
Participation Works has been a huge part of my life and has played a significant role in shaping who I am today. It has supported me in so many ways, from education and social skills, to workshops and opportunities to connect with local businesses and community members.
During the pandemic, I regularly joined Zoom calls with the staff, where we not only played virtual games but also discussed our experiences with isolation and shared our perspectives on the situation. Their support was really needed during such a difficult time.
I am truly grateful to Participation Works for helping me get to where I am today. From drafting my first CV to guiding me through my university application, the staff have been a significant help in my journey. Their dedication has not only helped me but also supported so many other young people in reaching their full potential.
What advice would you give to other young people?
My advice to young people is to just try everything you can - new opportunities, new experiences, and new things. We live in a world where it's so easy to say no and do what we are used to and live comfortably, but by trying new things and stepping out of that comfort zone, we live a truly unpredictable and fulfilling life. By giving something a go and working hard, you feel more accomplished and happy, knowing you've worked hard for everything. If you don't try, you never know what might happen. Try revising for that exam, try learning that new language, try applying for that new job; for that is living life, not knowing what could happen.
Thank you, Jordan!
