27th March 2025International Women's Day Event
On 6th March we took to Burnley Town Centre to celebrate IWD 2025 with members of the public at Charter Walk's beautiful Community Corner.
We set up at the space with balloons, banners, positive quotes & messages from inspiring women, an IWD themed playlist, free brews & cold drinks, cakes & snacks. We were thrilled with the positive response of passers by who came in to have a brew and cake & see what we're all about. It also helped that the sun was shining, so we could get out onto the street and encourage people to come in and join us!
Sam, The Period Coach, came along for the afternoon and gave out loads of free period products. We had also prepared & gave out 60 goodie boxes to women & girls of all ages; the boxes included hot chocolate sachets, lip balm, chocolates and sanitary products.
We took along our instant cameras so that people could snap a photo together as they responded to two questions on a scrawl wall - 'What's your greatest achievement?' and 'What's your hope for girls in the future?'. We were stunned by the responses, highlighting the real issue of safety that faces young girls today. The questions posed gave the opportunity for women & young girls to stop & reflect on what they're proud of and what they themselves hope will change; their insightful feedback gave us inspiration & ideas for future projects.
More than anything, we were heartened at the conversations between different generations, who entered the room as strangers but engaged in meaningful conversations about how we can all play a role in inciting positive change in our town. We were also encouraged by teenage boys who joined in conversation, telling us about how the women in their lives inspire them.
We loved making use of the fantastic community space and have already booked another event there in the near future to further engage with women & girls on the issues brought up on the scrawl wall. Thank you to Jason at Charter Walk for being so accommodating, we'll see you again very soon!
